StrangerFestival Competion Rules


1. Subject: Make a video of who you are, where you are and what you are into. Be yourself. Make it personal, to the point and real.

2. Maker: The StrangerFestival competition is for makers up to 25 years of age. The maker is required to be 25 or younger up and until 31 December 2008. Makers younger than 12 years of age cannot take part in the competition.

3. Length: Your video should be between 1 - 5 minutes long (60-300 seconds). This should include the opening titles and the end credits of the film. Longer or shorter videos will not be eligible for the competition.

4. Date of production: StrangerFestival encourages participants to submit videos that have been produced for the StrangerFestival competition. If you decide to submit a video you have already made, this video will need to have been made after June 2007.

5. Language: Please remember that in order to succeed in the competition, people outside your country need to understand your video. Subtitle your video with English subtitles if it includes non-English dialogue that needs to understood. Videos with dialogue but without subtitles will not be eligible for the competition.

6.Categories: The StrangerFestival video entries are divided into two group: videos of exactly 60 seconds (THEONEMINUTESJR) AND videos of 61-300 (STRANGER) seconds.
Be sure you select a category appropriate to your video as videos that are not submitted to one of the categories will not be eligible for the competition.

THEONEMINUTESJR:

StrangerFestival partners-up with theoneminutesjr. This means that all theoneminutesjr videos will also take part in the StrangerFestival competition. If you make a video of exactly 60 seconds, you can enter your video into theoneminutesjr competition by choosing one of the following categories:

- theoneminutesjr BEST OF THE WORLD: Open category for videos of 60 seconds.

- theoneminutesjr INSIDE/OUT: Sometimes we all feel like we belong, and other times we feel left out. Make a one-minute telling your experience, your opinion.

- theoneminutesjr SELF-PORTRAIT: 60-second portrait of yourself. Say who you are in your own way.

 
STRANGER

If you want to make your video longer than 1 minute (and less than 5) choose the Stranger category. Show who you are, where you’re from and what you are into, the people you live or hang-out with. Or show the people you don’t know but have are curious to find out more about. Interview, ask questions. How much of a stranger are you? Who are the strangers in your life? Video your unique view of the world.

Finalists will be selected on the basis of subject, creative approach, originality, popularity and quality. The winners will be chosen by a jury of young video makers and media experts. What’s more, the most popular videos on the website will also be awarded.

7. Rights for the material: StrangerFestival is run under the Creative Commons license. This means that the rights for your video stay with you but others can show your video if they credit you for it. This means that your video can be shown:

- on television
- on websites
- shared via video podcasts
- shared via Bluetooth
- screened in public events
- shown as part of the exhibition


By submitting your work into the competition, you agree to grant the organisers of the StrangerFestival and partners authorised by the organisers a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sub-licensable right and licence to use, reproduce, publish, distribute, broadcast and make available to the public. By submitting your work you allow the organisers to incorporate your contribution in other works in any media now known or later developed for the full term of any rights that may exist in your contribution

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that you have the permission to use the material in your film. This includes all the people who appear in your video and the music you use.

8. Music: Using copyrighted music will limit the possibilities to show your video in events and broadcasting. We therefore encourage you to create your own music or use copyright-free music. Take a look at the following links to share and download free music:

If you decide to use copyrighted music, be sure to send us the following information:

- Name of the song
- Artist
- Record Label


9. Submission:
There are 2 steps you have to take to submit your video into the competition:

- Upload your video to your StrangerFestival profile on StrangerFestival.com

- Send it on a DVD or CD together with the submit form to:

We need to receive a hardcopy of your video on Data-DVD/CD so that the best entries can be shown on television and in exhibitions. Videos that are not sent on a DVD/CD cannot be screened on television or in the exhibitions. So make sure you burn your video onto Data – DVD or CD in in the following format:


Video: DV PAL 720x576
Audio: 48Hz
And title your video like this: your last name_title of video. FOR EXAMPLE: Johnson_The Stranger



10. Deadline:
To be eligible for the StrangerFestival competition videos must be uploaded to StrangerFestival.com AND sent by post to Amsterdam by Thursday 15 May 2008 (postal stamp no later than this date). You can still upload videos to your profile after the competition has closed, but these videos will not take part in the StrangerFestival competition.

11. Awards: The StrangerFestival Awards take place at the Westergasfabriek terrain in Amsterdam on Saturday 5 July 2008. Mark this into your calendar as all the finalists will be invited to Amsterdam to join the festival weekend.

12. Prizes: The winners of every category receive a prize, either a laptop or a hard disc camcorder. All finalist videos will be shown as part of the StrangerFestival touring exhibition.
