STRANGER
EXHIBITION 2009 ISTANBUL

The StrangerExhibition in Istanbul was organized in the form of film screenings at the 165-seat film theater of the Pera Museum in collaboration with the museum and MODE ISTANBUL starting May 29th, through Sunday May 31st, 2009.

LOCATION

The Pera Museum, which opened its doors in early June 2005, is a fully-equiped modern museum, which serves as a distinguished multi-purpose cultural center in the heart of Istanbul, Beyoglu. The film theater hosts various events ranging from independent feature film screenings to festivals such as Istanbul Film Festival, Animation Film Festival and Documentarist.

PROGRAM

The videos in the public and private sections of the exhibition were grouped in 3 separate programs: “Stranger Within”, “Stranger Dreams” and “Stranger with a Cause”. The interactive OneMInutes videos and the videomaker interviews were edited consecutively to constitute the program “Stranger Portraits”. “Awarded Stranger Videos” was another individual program. The 15 videos completed during the 2008 Stranger Workshop in Istanbul were gathered in the “Stranger Turkey Selection”. After the program, there was a Q&A session held with 5 of the directors from the workshop: Ogulcan Ture (The Juice), Nazli Deniz Guler (Others), Pelin Oker (Strange), Can Sarcan (Last Minute), Burcu Atay (B.R.C).

Each program was screened twice during the 3-day period. During the intermissions, StrangerFestival submission flyers and educational DVDs were distributed to the viewers.

All of the videos that include dialogue were transcribed, translated into Turkish and subtitled.

 PROMOTIONS

Flyers, brochures and posters for both the exhibition and the festival call for entries were designed and distributed in key areas of the city and at universities. Press releases were sent out to the media for coverage by newspapers, monthly/bi-monthly magazines, internet blogs and film and youth groups (eg. Yahoogroups: Kisafilm, Kameraarkasi, Yeni-Sinema, Iletisim, IstanbulLife, MAFM Kisafilm, GoruntuSinema, A_Sinema, Kinaye, Sinemacom, Sine-Yorum, GenclikGirisimleri). Invitations were emailed to both the MODE ISTANBUL and Pera Museum databases.
